GPON or XGS-PON: Symmetrical 10-Gigabit Fibre Has Arrived — Is Your Site Ready?

For years, “fibre” meant GPON: up to 2.5 Gbit/s download and 1.25 Gbit/s upload, shared across the optical tree. Today, Italian operators — Open Fiber and FiberCop foremost among them — are switching on XGS-PON: 10 Gbit/s symmetrical, over the same fibre already laid. For a household, it is extra speed; for a business, it is a change of category — provided you understand what you are buying and have a site capable of handling it. Because here is the uncomfortable part: the bottleneck moves inside the building.

The differences that matter (without the jargon)

  • Speed and symmetry. GPON: 2.5/1.25 Gbit/s, shared. XGS-PON: 10/10 Gbit/s, shared. Symmetry is the development that matters most for businesses: cloud backup, videoconferencing, replication between sites and bulk uploads all travel at the same speed as downloads.
  • The same passive infrastructure. XGS-PON uses different wavelengths from GPON and can coexist on the same optical tree: the operator upgrades the equipment at both ends, while the fibre in the street stays the same. This is why coverage is expanding quickly wherever an FTTH network already exists.
  • Still shared bandwidth. Like GPON, XGS-PON also divides capacity among the users on the tree. For most businesses that is perfectly fine; for those with guaranteed-bandwidth requirements and strict SLAs, the comparison should be made against a dedicated point-to-point access — that is a calculation best made on site, based on real traffic figures.

When the upgrade is really worth it

Three typical cases where symmetrical 10 Gigabit pays off immediately: cloud backup and disaster recovery (the overnight window that is never quite long enough shrinks by an order of magnitude), sites working with heavy files (CAD, video, medical imaging — healthcare is the classic case), and replication between a site and a data centre, or between plants. If, on the other hand, a site barely saturates 1 Gbit/s, a well-built GPON connection remains more than sufficient: the upgrade should be planned, not chased.

The point almost everyone discovers too late: the site

A 10 Gbit/s access delivered onto an internal network designed for Gigabit is a new engine on old wheels. The checks to make before signing off on the upgrade:

  1. The optical termination and the router: the delivery equipment changes (XGS-PON ONT), and the site’s firewall/router must have 10 Gbit ports — many installed business appliances top out at 1.
  2. The internal backbone: between the delivery point and the floor cabinets, properly sized and certified fibre runs are needed — cabling to EN 50173/50174 is exactly this kind of work. Older-category copper, over the wrong distances, brings everything back down to 1 Gbit.
  3. Distribution: access switches with 10 Gbit uplinks and, where needed, multigigabit connections to demanding workstations.
  4. Testing the whole chain: the speed stated in the contract is measured at the user’s socket, not at the operator’s termination point. Every internal run must be certified with instruments and a report, or the “10 Gigabit” remains on paper only.

The pre-upgrade checklist

  • Measure your current traffic profile (peaks, upload volumes, timings): the upgrade must be justified by the numbers.
  • Check the actual XGS-PON coverage at your address and the alternatives (dedicated access) with their respective SLAs.
  • Take an inventory of the internal chain: ONT → router/firewall → backbone → switch → sockets. Every link below 10 Gbit is your new limit.
  • Plan the cabling upgrade together with the contract change, not afterwards: one intervention, one round of testing.
  • Insist on the certification report for every run that is touched.
