Italy's data centre boom: €25 billion, and every megawatt means fibre

2026 is the year the Italian data centre market changed order of magnitude: announced investment exceeds €25 billion over the 2026-2028 three-year period, with double-digit growth unmatched anywhere else in Europe. Milan accounts for around 68% of national installed capacity and is aiming to surpass 1 GW by 2028 — with projections of up to 2 GW by 2031 — drawing in almost a quarter of all investment announced at European level. The engine driving it is well known: artificial intelligence is hungry for compute, and compute needs buildings, power and connectivity. Behind the billion-euro headlines, though, lies a technical fact that touches our trade directly: every megawatt announced is kilometres of fibre to be laid, spliced and certified.
Where the fibre ends up inside a data centre
Those who don’t work in the field picture data centres as rooms full of servers. In reality they are, first and foremost, network nodes: external backbones connecting them to other nodes and to international routes, meet-me rooms where dozens of operators interconnect, and an internal density — from hall backbones to rack-to-rack cabling — that grows with every generation. AI clusters have multiplied the requirement: distributed computing architectures demand dense optical interconnections between racks, with MTP/MPO connectivity, patch cords and cross-connections that must be installed cleanly and certified one by one — at these densities, a dirty connector or a mediocre splice is not a minor detail: it’s capacity that goes missing.
And there is a variable that traditional building sites don’t have: in live data centres, work happens without stopping anything. Migrations, hall expansions, backbone overhauls: agreed windows, often overnight, procedures to avoid touching what is live, and immediate testing of whatever is handed over. It is a trade built on discipline before speed.
What it means for businesses (even far from Milan)
The boom isn’t just about those who build. Three concrete knock-on effects:
- Colocation is becoming more accessible: as capacity grows, moving your own systems into a data centre — or adopting a hybrid model — becomes a realistic option even for the mid-market. The prerequisite is the connection: a dedicated, certified fibre link between your premises and the data centre, sized to actual requirements.
